l115a3 sniper rifle

L115a3 Sniper Rifle - The Accuracy International AWM (Arctic Warfare Magnum or AI-Arctic Warfare Magnum) is a bolt-action rifle manufactured by Accuracy International designed for Magnum rifle cartridges. The International Precision AWM is also known as the AWSM (Arctic Warfare Super Magnum), which typically calibrates AWM rifles chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum.

On September 9, 2012, Accuracy International announced that the .338 Lapua Magnum AWM rifle was being phased out and replaced by the Accuracy International AXMC shotgun.

The AXMC bolt action was designed to be stronger and more capable of handling higher chamber pressures and temperatures and thus a higher thrust for bolt safety than the AWM, and is therefore longer and wider. The AXMC magazine was accordingly extended to work with the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridges loaded in the International Commission Permante pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives (C.I.P.). Maximum acceptable overall length 93.50 mm (3.681 inches).

The International Accuracy AWM sniper rifle is a variant of the British Accuracy International Arctic Warfare (AW) rifle which was the basis of the Arctic Warfare family of sniper rifles. So the design details of the AWM variant are similar to those found in the basic AW gun system. Compared to the AW, the AWM has a longer bolt to accommodate larger magnum-lgth cartridges such as the .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum. The bolt head, locking ring and extractor and magazines were also modified to work with the increased size and operating pressure of magnum rifle cartridges.

The AWM has a detachable single stack box magazine that holds five rounds. The standard cartridges for this rifle and the cartridges accepted by NATO for use in AWM rifles are the .300 Winchester Magnum and the .338 Lapua Magnum.

The muzzle brakes are fitted to reduce recoil, bounce and flare, and serve as a base for optional metal sights and suppressors.

The standard configuration consists of a Schmidt & Bder PM II 5-25×56FFP MK II binocular sight with a P4F graticule but variants with different magnifications of 3–12×50 or 4–16×50 are also available. Accuracy International actively promotes the installation of the German-made Schmidt & Beider PM II/Military Mk II product line as a sight feature on their rifles, which is rare for a gun manufacturer. The German and Russian armies preferred binocular sights made by Zeiss.

The AWM rifle is usually supplied in a metal case with a telescopic sight, mount, butt spacer, bipod, spare magazine, sling, cleaning and tool kit.

The .300 Winchester Magnum (7.62×67mm) cartridge was designed as a Magnum hunting cartridge and offers a sharper trajectory with a significant increase in muzzle velocity, wind resistance, and superior range over the smaller 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. The ability of the .300 Winchester Magnum chambering to achieve high muzzle velocities with a relatively heavy bullet and a very low length increases the possibility of hitting at long distances and thus makes a better range compared to the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. . The AWM is fitted with a fluted, stainless steel barrel that is 660 millimeters (26 inches) long and 279.4 millimeters (1:11 inches) long with a right-hand twist rate, chambered for .300.

The AWM in .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6×70mm) caliber was designed as a special long-range rifle. The gun is fitted with a stainless steel, fluted, 686 mm (27.0 in) barrel, which research has found to be the best compromise between muzzle velocity, weight and lgth. The barrel has an unusual 279 mm (1:11) right-handed twist, suitable for firing .338 caliber bullets down to 16.85 g (260 g). The AWM .338 Lapua Magnum was designed as a military issue cartridge loaded with a very low 16.2 g (250 gr) bullet. Longer, heavier, lower-drag bullets such as the Sierra HPBT MatchKing .338-caliber 19.44 g (300 grains) and 21-caliber 19.44 g (300) .338-caliber HPBT Scar can be used, but the 24 mm (24 mm ) mm) 1 :10 in) degree of twist to keep them straight under conditions of high air density such as those found on the Arctic coast.

A limitation of AWM rifles is that the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridges loaded in the International Commission Permante pour l'Epreuve des Armes à Feu Portatives (C.I.P.) do not meet the maximum permissible overall length of 93.50 mm (3.681 inches). Lack of local newspaper lgth. This is because the AWM bolt action was originally developed for smaller cartridges and modified for the .338 Lapua Magnum chambering.

Ammunition manufacturers produce the .338 Lapua Magnum to produce military cartridges loaded with a very low 16.2 gram (250 g) bullet (total length lgth ≤ 91.44 mm (3.600 inches)) that fits into a 91.5 mm (mm 3.60).As long as .338 Lapua Magnum cartridges that fit in the magazines are used, AWM rifles can be used as repeating rifles instead of single shot.

To counter the AWM's limitations of .338 Lapua Magnum lgth, Accuracy International developed the AX338 Long Range Rifle as a successor model to the AWM. The bolt action of the AX338 is longer and wider than that of the AWM, and the internal magazine is lgthed, which allows the weak use of .338 Lapua Magnum cartridges loaded in the C.I.P. (Permanent International Commission for the Certification of Portable Arms) Maximum permissible overall lgth 93.5 mm (3.68 inches). Additionally, the AX338 has a 238 mm (1:9.375 in) twist rate that is strong enough to house the heavier .338 low-drag designs that became more prevalent in the 21st century.

The types of ammunition available for the .338 Lapua Magnum are FMJ, hollow point, armor piercing (AP) and armor piercing memory (API).

The British Army adopted the AWM rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum as the L115A1 long-range rifle. In November 2007, the British Ministry of Defense (MOD) announced that their snipers in the Army, Royal Marines and RAF forces would receive new guns. Precision International will supply 580 L115A3 long-range rifles with telescopic sights. The L115A3 is being offered as part of the wider Sniper System Improvement Program (SSIP) which also includes night sights, optical scopes, various laser sights and tripods.

L115a3: The Best Sniper Rifle Today?

The MOD claims a muzzle velocity of 936 m/s (3,071 ft/s) for the L115A3 (front folding stock variant of the AWM-F).

When the L115A3 Long Range Rifle was only 6 years into its life cycle, the UK Ministry of Defense (MOD) recognized the improved capabilities of the AX series rifle for use by special forces. The new AX Series chassis system provides greater flexibility for use with (later) low-light and daylight focusing optics, lasers and other devices without the need for a special mounting interface. The right-folding AX series chassis system was more compact in its folded configuration, making it more portable and concealable, and featured a pistol grip. At the request of the MOD Accuracy International investigated the possibility of updating the L115A3 long-range gun in the AX series chassis system, to create a hybrid gun of AWM and AX characteristics. The AX Hansmuts were well received by MOD and British snipers and an upgrade program was started which produced the L115A4. The L115A4 can easily be mistaken for the newer AX series guns. The Schmidt & Bder 5-25×56 mm PM II LP/MILITARY MKII 5-25×56 along with the suppressor, bipod and many other accessories from the L115A3 were reused in the L115A4 resulting in significant cost savings. Along with the gun updates, the L115A4 includes a new deployment case, maintenance kits and other accessories.
