Every Glock Model - Understanding all the different models of Glock 9mm handguns can be a bit overwhelming. In retrospect, it would have been convenient if Glock had just named their handguns after the cartridges they were chambered for: G9 9mm, G10 10mm, G40 40 S&W, etc.

But Glock named their pistols after patents, not cartridges. For example, the G17 was Gaston Glock's 17th patent. In addition, Glock offers several different pistols chambered for the same cartridge.

It just turns out that the Austrian firearms maker is to offer a gun chambered in 9mm ammunition, the world's most popular pistol cartridge for self-defense. Their model numbers tell you nothing about what makes these guns unique. You either want to learn everything by studying, or refer to our handy Glock 8mm Models guide when you want to know what each different model does.

What's The Difference Between Glock 17, Glock 19, & Glock 26

The original Glock pistol, the G17 is used by LEOs, military personnel, and anyone else who entrusts their personal safety with a handgun around the world. We'll spend most of our time detailing the G17, since much of what we can say about it also applies to Glock's other 9mm handguns.

Like all Glock handguns (and virtually all other manufacturers' 9mm handguns), the G17 operates with short recoil. This means that the barrel and bolt move together only a short distance. At this point the barrel is stopped, the bolt is extended rearward and the rear spring is compressed to initiate simultaneous feeding and ejection.

Like other Glock guns, the G17 has a nylon-based polymer frame. Gaston Glock himself invented this proprietary material called "Polymer 2". Light but extremely resilient, the Glock's polymer frame is mostly only visible from the top, as it's not as aesthetically pleasing as a metal frame with wood grips. Contrary to popular belief, Glock pistols are not "X-ray proof". 84% of the weight of the G17 is made of steel, and the polymer 2 itself is X-ray detectable.

The barrel of the Glock rifle is distinguished by the absence of a traditional rifle. Instead of lands and grooves, its polygonal gun has a hexagonal cross-sectional profile. (Although the 45 ACP and 45 GAP models have octagonal profiles.) Because the polygon rifling has no sharp corners, it can create a superior gas seal that promotes more efficient ignition. It's also slightly easier to clean.

Five Reasons The Glock 19 Is A Great Carry Gun

All modern Glock pistols have the manufacturer's Safe Action. This system includes an integrated trigger safety (basically a trigger that can't function unless a finger puts pressure on it), a drop safety, and a trigger safety. Of course, you should treat any firearm as if it were always loaded, but Glock's multiple levels of safety make it a safe choice for personal protection.

The G17 has a double stack magazine in which cartridges are stored in two columns. This gives it a larger capacity at the expense of its expansion. It is important to note that most Glock 9mm magazines are interchangeable as long as they are (A) long enough and (B) the same style (eg single stack or double stack). For example, a Glock 33-round 9mm magazine will work in both the G17 and G19. However, the short 10-round table of the G26 cannot fit the longer capacity of the G17. (Glock mags are also backwards compatible, meaning a Gen 5 rifle can use a Gen 4 gun and vice versa.)

Many shooters dislike Glock's factory sights and make replacing them a top priority. You may find the G17's stock plastic sights inadequate for the job, though not everyone will like them. We recommend that you at least give them a try the old college before investing in new sights.

The long barrel of the G17L makes it relatively unwieldy, and as such it is generally only used for recreational and competitive shooting where accuracy is paramount. A longer barrel benefits accuracy by giving the projectile greater rotational stability, as well as allowing propellant gases more time to transfer energy to the projectile (resulting in higher muzzle velocity). The G17 also offers a lighter trigger, making it easier to hold the gun steady while the shooter pulls the trigger.

While it's still a full-size pistol in every sense of the term, the G19's smaller dimensions may make it more attractive for everyday carry than the G17 for those who want to carry less weight or make it less obvious that they're armed.

The G19 has a 4.02" barrel instead of 4.49" and weighs about two ounces less when fully loaded. The overall height of the G19 is also almost 0.5" shorter, but it achieves its shorter height by holding two fewer rounds in the magazine. As is usually the case with semi-auto weapons, you will benefit from carrying a smaller gun. At the expense of the stock. Fewer rounds in your immediate is available.

Unlike the G17 and G19, the G19X has no finger grooves on the palm. (Although some G17 and G19 pistols are available from the Glock factory without finger grooves.) Many shooters don't like grooves because their fingers don't fit properly, but grooves can make them easier to machine to improve accuracy.

The G19X also features a coyote tan factory-colored slide with a corrosion-resistant nPVD coating, ambidextrous slide stop levers, and a Glock Marksman's barrel (GMB)-enhanced rifling to further increase accuracy.

Glock 19 Gen 4 Review

The G26 is a true subcompact. It caters to those who prefer to conceal a very small pistol or carry it using an ankle holster. The lower height of the G26 means that its standard magium holds fewer cartridges; However, because it uses a double stack magazine, it is still compatible with the longer magnets G17 and G19.

As with any subcompact, the G26's handy size has its drawbacks. Its relatively short barrel gives the bullet less muzzle velocity and therefore less energy on impact. It also offers worse accuracy than a long barrel. The G26's lighter weight is less capable of absorbing recoil energy, so expect more muzzle flip when shooting this small 9mm pistol.

Like the G17L, the G34's primary location is on the target range. The G34's long barrel enhances accuracy. In addition, its long slide dramatically reduces muzzle recoil and lengthens the weapon's sight. The G34 also has a long-lasting dual spring assembly, though its integral rail also lends itself to tactical situations. SWAT teams that are completely unconcerned about concealing the weapons they are carrying often take advantage of the G34's excellent accuracy as well.

The smallest Glock 9mm handgun, the G43 is an exceptionally light 1.3 pounds when fully loaded. Its total length is only 78% of G17. Its short height and narrow width make the G43 even more comfortable to conceal and carry.

Glock Magazine Capacity: How Many Bullets Every Glock Holds [2022]

Like the G26, the G43's small grip can make the gun significantly more difficult to control. This is especially true for those of us with large hands. The G43 also gets its diminutive power thanks to its single magazine (although the rounds are carried in a slightly zigzag formation). This gives the G43 a very small six-round capacity, as well as the inability to accept the double-stack tables of larger rifles.

The subcompact G43X features Glock's Slimline frame. This gives it a reduced muzzle length and diameter for more convenient concealed carry. The G43X's smaller frame reduces its magazine capacity. It also requires a single stack mag, which is incompatible with many other Glock 9mm firearms. The G43X's game-grade GMB helps improve accuracy, and its front slide slides give the shooter more choice in how to load the gun. (Note that many experts don't like the forward bolt. They believe that no one should put their finger so close to the muzzle of a loaded gun.)

The G45 combines the G19X design with a true Gen 5 frame and front slide rods. The G45 also features the G19X's nPVD and GMB finish, making it a very practical yet compact solution for personal protection and law enforcement applications.

Like the G43X, the G48 features Glock's Slimline frame with forward-retractable slide. The length of the G48's firing barrel naturally affects its accuracy, but the GMB does a lot to compensate for this shortcoming.

As Glock improves the overall design of the gun, they introduce this range of improvements as their latest generation. Glock usually introduces a few new models when they launch a new generation, such as the G19X Gen 4. There have been five generations so far. For those of us who own guns and haven't been living under a rock for the past 3 decades, the name Glock has become a household word in the shooting world. People who may have never handled a gun (except a Glock) recognize the name. It is estimated that 65% of US police agencies use some form of Glock. It's time to take an in-depth look at everything you need to know about Glock
