The planned M1A3 prototype is expected to start production in 2020.

Photos From The Army's 'iron Brigade' Show How Much Power The M1 Abrams Tank Is Packing

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) is the prime contractor responsible for upgrades to the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank, a variant of which is in service with the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines and six current international personnel.

Although a highly respected platform with a good combat record, the Abrams design initially did not include any form of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), instead relying on a large gas engine to supply electrical power to various systems in the car. In addition to the noise, fuel consumption and heat signature generated by the operation of the power plant, this prevented any form of "watch overwatch" to keep vital electrical systems online without running the engine. . Although battery power was ultimately used as a temporary solution, the US Army noted that the addition of an APU could improve operational performance. The challenge, however, was that very little space was available in the vehicle for such a system, which had to be highly reliable in combat conditions without producing excessive noise, heat or increasing fuel consumption.

Traditional APU designs are somewhat "boxy" and "high-rise", which led to attempts to place the APU at the rear of the turret (a type of external storage in the tank), which was not ideal. Finally, the engineers decided that the rear sponson compartment could be used for the APU, provided such an engine could be made to fit into a compartment with a space one foot high.

The above fact gave the engineers of Marvin Land Systems (MLS) a very difficult "space requirement" where to place an APU capable of producing enough electrical power to meet the needs of the vehicle. With the very low vertical height available to work with, it was clear that conventional engine designs would not work. MLS turned to well-known diesel engine manufacturer Hatz Diesel to create an engine that would have a low vertical height but could provide enough electrical power.

The low-end APU that MLS developed to meet the vehicle's power requirements is included in the Systems Enhancement Package (SEP) version 3, which uses the abbreviation SEPv3. Other car upgrades included in this package include improved connectivity and networking; New Vehicle Life Management System; gun data link; improved counter-IED weapons; Improved FLIR; and the low-level CROWS Remote Weapons Station, among others.

The US Army was satisfied with the performance of the low-end APU, and as part of an ongoing series of upgrades to the M1A2 Abrams platform, it included a new APU under the SEPv3 modification that began prototype testing in 2015, in the early stages of the process . at the end of 2017.

Ultimately, the APU upgrade could be retrofitted to more than 1,500 M1A2 vehicles in the US Army inventory.

MLS has demonstrated the ability to find innovative solutions for power supply needs, using limited space requirements to provide reliable, efficient and cost-effective solutions.
